Orlando, FL – It has been quite a productive summer for the IAA team and the quest for a balanced budget amendment (BBA) to the U.S. Constitution. We had a remarkable 2014 legislative session in which we racked up six state applications (OH, GA, TN, MI, FL, & LA) in just six months without any funding.
Currently, we have twenty-four of the thirty-four state applications required to call an Article V Convention limited to proposing a balanced budget amendment. Right now we are gearing up for another challenging legislative session in 2015 when we will be active in thirteen states in order to reach thirty-four states by April 2015.
In that pursuit, the IAA team scored a huge victory last May by recruiting Herman Cain to take the lead on this important issue at the national level. His first act in support of the BBA campaign was to attend a freedom rally aboard the U.S.S. Yorktown in Charleston, SC to help recruit citizens of the palmetto state to volunteer and prepare for the 2015 legislative session. The turnout was fantastic and Mr. Cain lit the crowd on fire with his passionate support for our quest.
In another great step towards the first Article V Convention in American history, the Assembly of State Legislatures met in Indianapolis the weekend of June 12 – 13th to craft the rules by which a convention will be held. Legislators from over thirty states gathered in the Hoosier state to establish these rules in order to alleviate the fears of a ‘run-away’ convention. They divided into committees and set about doing the hard work that will be required to finalize the rules once they meet again in December.
As this summer progressed, it became apparent that the IAA educational team of Loren Enns and Lou Marin would need to take an extensive road-trip out west in order to recruit grassroots activists in each state where we will be seeking applications. That led to a ten stop, twelve-day road trip across six of our target states: AZ, UT, ID, MT, WY & SD. The IAA team will be working with the NFIB and the legislators in each state to put on these events which will target Republican, Tea Party, 912 and Libertarian groups. The trip will begin on September 2nd in Sioux Falls, SD and end on September 13th in Boise, ID.

In other news, Herman Cain hit another grand-slam by graciously agreeing to speak at the American Legislative Exchange Council’s (ALEC) yearly meeting in Dallas, Texas. ALEC has more than 1200 members, all of whom are active state legislators. Mr. Cain gave the key-note speech in which he encouraged the state legislators to finish the job by passing the final ten state applications necessary to call an Article V Convention to propose a BBA that the states can ratify.
